According to a report, Malaysia's semiconductor industry aims to double its export value to 1.2 trillion ringgit (257 billion US dollars) by 2030.
The report quoted Wong Siew Hai, the president of the Malaysian Semiconductor Industry Association, as saying that this goal will consolidate Malaysia's position as the sixth largest chip exporting country in the world.
We expect to need 300000 talents to achieve this goal, "said Wong Siew Hai. However, this Southeast Asian country is facing a shortage of local talent and is currently seeking to recruit talent from overseas.
Malaysia exported semiconductors worth RM575.45 billion in 2023, with sales reaching a record of RM593 billion in 2022.
After US tech giants Microsoft, Alphabet, and Nvidia announced plans to establish data centers in Malaysia last year, Malaysia is becoming a key bet for artificial intelligence (AI) related services in Asia. The Malaysian government is also seeking Chinese investors to establish data centers to attract more 'high-quality' investments.
At the same time, the association proposes to provide jobs for foreign students in Malaysia, especially those in the fields of science and engineering, to address the labor shortage issue.
