Samsung mass produces the fastest PM9E1 NVMe Gen 5 SSD, with a speed of up to 14.5GB/s

Samsung revealed that its PM9E1 NVMe Gen 5 SSD was released at the end of August and has now started mass production. The Samsung PM9E1 SSD is the successor to the Samsung PM9A1 NVMe Gen 4 launched in April 2021, with read and write speeds more than doubled. In addition, the durability level (TBW, which refers to the number of terabytes written during the service life) has doubled to 2400TBW, while PM9A1 has 1200TBW, making it a highly reliable long-term storage drive.

The previous generation Samsung PM9A1 NVMe Gen 4 had a read speed limit of 7GB/s and a write speed limit of 5.2GB/s. In contrast, we now see that the PM9E1 NVMe Gen 5 has achieved astonishing read speeds of 14.5GB/s and write speeds of 13GB/s.

Samsung stated that the PM9E1 SSD integrates a 5nm controller, providing industry-leading energy efficiency and the highest performance, which has been recognized by major partners. In the rapidly growing era of device AI, Samsung PM9E1 will provide a solid foundation for global customers to effectively plan their AI product portfolio. This measure aims to target both consumers and businesses, but the product seems to lean towards enterprise needs, especially in the AI field.

PM9E1 has four capacities to choose from: 512GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB. The company stated that the 4TB model is aimed at PC users who require a large amount of space to store AI generated materials, as well as games, high-resolution videos, and other intensive tasks and large files.

According to Samsung, the energy efficiency of PM9E1 has increased by more than 50% compared to the previous generation product. The company stated that this will help extend battery life, including when running AI tasks on the device. Through the updated security protocol and data model (SPDM) version 1.2, the drive has also added multiple security features, including device authentication and firmware tampering proof.
