Seoul Semiconductor, with tens of thousands of advanced LED technology patents, has surpassed Nichia from Japan to become the world's largest manufacturer of backlit light-emitting diode (LED) displays.
According to market tracking firm Omdia, Seoul Semiconductor's market share for backlight LEDs has risen from 15.2% in 2022 to 16.5% in 2023, ranking first.
As a perennial leader in backlight LED, Nichia Chemical's market share has grown slowly, from 15.3% to 15.9%, ranking second.

From 2018 to 2022, Seoul Semiconductor Company consistently ranked second and fourth in 2017.

Backlight is a form of illumination used for LED or liquid crystal displays (LCD), which provides light from the back or side of the display panel.
RiAsia Chemical, which has developed blue LED technology, has been leading the backlight LED market for many years. Nichia Chemical, known for its DynaSolis lighting technology, achieved sales of $1.67 billion last year.
Seoul Semiconductor, founded in 1992, has developed various LED displays for a wider range of consumer products, including automotive components. The company has invested over 1 trillion Korean won (725 million US dollars) in research and development. Seoul Semiconductor and its subsidiaries, including Seoul Viosys and Sensor Electronic Technology Inc. (SETi), have over 18000 patents. Many of Seoul Semiconductor's patented technologies are world firsts.
Last year, Seoul Semiconductor announced that its SunLike LED was adopted by European automaker Volvo and used for interior lighting in the Volvo EX90 SUV and Polestar 3 EV.
